# 13. Voice lexicon

Words the receptionist should pronounce differently, per language. Phone only.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Phone only.** The voice lexicon changes how words are **spoken**. Chat channels show the text as written.
{% endhint %}

Text-to-speech sometimes mispronounces brand names, abbreviations or symbols. **Content → 13. Voice lexicon** lets you tell the receptionist how to say them, per language.

## Fields per rule

| Field       | What it does                          | Example |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------- | ------- |
| **Written** | The text as it appears in a sentence. | `&`     |
| **Spoken** | How the receptionist should say it. | *and* |

Click **Add pronunciation** for a new rule. The rules are **per language**: the English bot shipped with `& → and`, and the Dutch version with `& → en`.

## When to add a rule

| Problem                                | Written   | Spoken     |
| -------------------------------------- | --------- | ---------- |
| A symbol is read literally             | `&`       | *and*      |
| An abbreviation is spelled out wrongly | `BV` | *bee vee* |
| A brand name sounds foreign            | `Enreach` | *En-reach* |

{% hint style="success" %}
**Test by phone.** The chat preview doesn't use the voice lexicon. Call the receptionist, or use **Click to call** in the preview with Telephony selected, to hear the result.
{% endhint %}

Voice, speech recognition, background sound and barge-in are set under **Channels → Telephony → Speech**. See [Channel differences](/smart-receptionist/channels/channel-differences.md#telephony).
