# Test and publish

Try the draft receptionist in the Studio preview, then publish it so callers get the new version.

## Draft and live

Everything you change, in the Guided Setup, Content, Channels or Settings, goes into the bot's **draft** first. Callers keep getting the published version until you **Publish**. Pages with unpublished changes say *Before these settings are live, you need to publish them first.*

## Test in the preview

The **Preview** pane on the right of the Content section talks to the **draft**.

1. Pick the channel at the top of the preview: **Telephony**, **Chat widget**, **PWA** or **Whatsapp**.
2. Start the conversation:
   * **Telephony:** click **Click to call** to talk to the receptionist in the browser, or use **Try on device → Link your phone number** to call it from your own phone.
   * **Chat channels:** click **Click to start** and type in the message box.
3. Use **Test transcript** to see what happened, and **Stop** to end the conversation.

Test conversations are counted separately on the Dashboard (**Test (Studio)**), so they don't skew your real statistics.

{% hint style="success" %}
**What to test before publishing**

* Ask for each department and for a few colleagues by first name.
* Ask a question for each topic, and one the receptionist shouldn't know.
* Call or chat outside office hours, or temporarily change the hours, and check that a message is taken and arrives in the right mailbox.
* If you use them, test the keypad menu, spam handling and emergencies.
* Repeat the key cases on every channel you offer. See [Channel differences](/smart-receptionist/channels/channel-differences.md).
  {% endhint %}

## Publish

Click **Publish** at the bottom of the screen. **Publish** is greyed out while you have unsaved changes, so click **Save** first.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Publishing makes the changes live straight away** for everyone who calls the extension or uses a connected chat channel.
{% endhint %}

## Keep an eye on it

* **Dashboard.** Counters for the last 7 days: *Serviced, Forwarded, Escalated, Deflected, No fallback, Canceled, Spam*, per channel (*Voice, Web chat, WhatsApp, Email, Test (Studio)*), and a **Fallback reason** chart.
* **Conversations**, **Contacts** and **Notes**, under *Manage*, for individual conversations and the messages taken.
